BuzzRickson's M-43 Service Shoes Made in Japan BR02800 Suede Cowhide
The M-43 service shoes became widely known when Steve McQueen wore them along with the A-2 in the movie "The Great Escape," and they remain extremely popular as footwear to go with the A-2.
The U.S. Army service shoes, called Type III, which had suede on the back of leather, were adopted in 1943.
Type II uses smooth leather on the surface, but Type III uses the leather on the inside, making it easier for your feet to slip in and out and providing a comfortable fit.
The leather is treated with a penetrating wax to protect it and improve its waterproofing.
In Type III, the toe cap has been eliminated to allow for better mobility, and the sole has been changed from a half rubber sole to a full sole, improving waterproofness and strength.
The M-43 Type III was available in two models, the early model with rivets at the tip of the wing and the later model without them. It was used as foot gear for soldiers during World War II and was also used as flying shoes by pilots and crew.
